First Drive:
2007 BMW 335i Coupe

2007 BMW 335i CoupeWith 300 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque, BMW's new turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine in the 335i Coupe is "impressive", reports Paul Williams. "The power from this engine is so smooth and so substantial, that you feel any passing or accelerating manoeuvre is within its ability," he says. Yet, combined city/highway fuel consumption is listed as just 9.5 L/100 km (30 mpg Imp.), he reports.     More...

I'll take a 335xi..... money is NOT in the bank... but decision is easy.

I have always liked the big lazy torque output of turbocharged engines...ever since I had a Saab 900 turbo in the early 80's    combine that with a straight six....  yummy.

But I'd rather have the regular 4 door than the coupe, for headroom and rear seat room

I absoultely LOVE this car. It would be high on my wish list if money was no object. It is sleek and sexy, but doesn't attract too much attention. But most importantly, 300 hp turbocharged  :lick:

The idea with the "arm" that extends out to help you grab your seatbelt is pretty cool, although I can see that having electrical issues down the road.

"The only real negative was the navigation system, whose avatar seemed to go mental in our car, barking out contradictory instructions one after the other, in rapid-fire sequence. It was a bizarre experience solved by switching her off (and recalling jokes about HAL in the movie "2001: A Space Odyssey"), using a paper map, asking directions and following signs. This still works quite well."   Thank you for mentioning this Paul.

I'm glad that BMW didn't just turn the 3 series sedan into a coupe by chopping off the rear doors.

BMW finally jumps on the SAAB TURBO bandwagon!
Torque is KING. Wonder why though it took them so
long to realize what SAAB did in 1977!

Didn't BMW make the 2002 with a turbo back in 1973? I think it was short lived (2 years maybe) and then they pulled the plug.

Unless if this info is incorrect  ???

The ultimate New Class sedan was the 2002 Turbo. The 2002 Turbo was introduced at the 1973 Frankfurt Auto Show. Production stopped in July 1975. Between July 1973 and July 1975, only 1,672 models were built. None were certified for sale in the USA.

The 2002 Turbo produced 170 hp at 5800 rpm, with the same basic 2.0-liter engine as the 2002 ti.

The distinguishing feature of the Turbo was the Kuhnle, Kopp & Kausch turbocharger. It was mounted low on the right front of the engine and air was fed to it through a tube. The holes in the front spoiler are for cooling. The large center opening is for the oil cooler, while the smaller one to the right is used for the tube that feeds cool air directly onto the turbo itself.

The Turbo had heavy-duty clutch and steering, a 40% limited slip differential, and 10" vented rotors for the front brakes. A Getrag close ratio 5-speed gearbox was optional. Heavy-duty shocks were fitted, along with standard 13-inch two-tone steel wheels, the same as 320i wheels. 6" wide "turbo style" alloys were optional.

The 2002 Turbo was made in only two colors, Chamonix white and Polaris silver, with a tri-color M stripe on the sides and front spoiler. Other external features were the Turbo badge on the left rear, the fender flares, the rear deck spoiler, the lack of a front bumper, and the front spoiler. The very early models had "2002 turbo" in reverse script on the front spoiler.

A red plastic panel highlights the instrument cluster, which contains a clock and a boost gauge. There is no oil pressure or oil temperature gauge. The boost gauge has a white zone (no boost), a green zone (the boost is On), and a red zone (too much boost). Black sport seats and a sport steering wheel were standard. Most 2002 options were either standard or available, including cloth seats and a sunroof. Air-conditioning was not an option because there was no room for the condenser.

The 2002 Turbo can do 0-60 in 6.9 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph. The turbocharger kicks in at about 3500-4000 rpm.

Must admit the look is growing on me. At first I was quite sad that the rear end was so low - I loved the stubby high deck lids with short overhangs on 3 Series Coupes. But this new Coupé IS very elegant. Almost feminine looking to me - unlike the masculine looking 6 which does bare resemblance, but still a delight.

The looks, technology, handling/ride, and engine - and 'BMW' - at that price seems like a bar-goon.

Drivetrain sounds fantastic.  If it has typical BMW characteristics, the car will be a hoot to drive.  As for the looks, I'm not too hot for it.  Maybe it looks sexier in the flesh but even the new e90's don't look as good to me as the e46.  $50K would be quite a bargain for this car, going head to head with the 300hp G35 coupe....too bad options might push the BMW to $60K if you want it equipped like a G.

Thanks for this and interesting to be sure.
I guess what made the Saab turbo possible in the mass market sense were the advances
they made with regards to engine control and monitoring
this reached critical mass with the introduction of APC (Automatic Performance
Control) which monitored amongst other things fuel quality to optimize engine
performance then in the early '90's their revoltionary TRIONIC ECU with direct
ignition soon copied by others.

Yeah there's no question that Saab and to an extent Volvo definately popularized turbo engines. I remember taking a zip in a friends 900 Turbo, and turbo lag aside, that car was an absolute hoot to drive.

I think a few 2002 turbos DID make it to North America..... the rules for grey market importing were easier in those days.  From what I have read about them, at 3900 rpm they generated 80 bhp  at 4000 rpm they generated 170 bhp  with tremendous lag... must have been exciting on a slippery surface

My 900 turbo was an 81 so pre APC and fancy electronic control.  It was a bit laggy and came on suddenly and in the true Saab 900 tradition ripped the steering wheel out of your hands as the boost came on. It wasn't all that powerful but it had a lot more torque than the atmospheric 900

Twin turbo. Hmmm..... wonder how much one can coax out of it. 400hp shouldn't be too difficult I say. The 3-series coupe. A car I love to hate, but at last I can't anymore.  :-[ I want one!!!
