Used car review:
Dodge SRT-4, 2004-2005

Dodge SRT-4, 2004-2005While the Dodge SRT-4 is less refined than high-performance offerings from many import automakers, this rip-snorting little Dodge is still a formidable performer, reports Chris Chase. “The SRT-4 appears to be quite solid mechanically,” he says, “there are no recalls…but owners have reported some smaller issues.”  Resale values are surprisingly high, he notes.      More...

You hit on the major points, yes.

The SRT-4 was not available with side airbags.

Actually it was, but for $500 and at the loss of the great sport seats.

I stand by my point that this is the most fun FWD car I have ever driven, and any enthusiast who looks down upon this car as "just another neon" is mistaken.

The stock exhaust had a really loud and powerful sounding growl.  Quite possibly one of the ugliest front ends on a car, but it really was/is a good car for someone looking for performance on a budget.

Not sure how they compare "on the road" price-wise, but I'd take the Cobalt SS over this...

If you can look past its garish rear wings and outrageous front end styling, SRT-4 is one hell of a car.

How reliable are these sup-up Neons. I would would aways be afraid it would brake. I love the boyracer looks though. Its loud and in your face. The way a sup-up pocket rocket should be.

But you'd lose the massive headroom you need from the neon...

This car goes like hell, and thanks to the LSD, power is used.

I'd love one of these - haven't driven one but did get a ride around an autocross type course - very quick. My peon level Neon has been very reliable so I'd be comfortable with the reliability of these.

Aside from what is evidently a sweet turbocharged engine I can't see
what is so attractive about this car. Sure it goes like stink (see turbo engine)
the handling is good (so is any small FWD car set up correctly with the
right springs, shocks, roll bars and bushings) so taken overall and considering
what a pile of crap the base neon is you'd have to make this really cheap
for me to buy. To my mind, a GTI with a 1.8t and some mods makes
a much better choice.

I think the author came down a little hard on the SRT4. Although I have not driven an SRT, I have read numerous articles on the car and without exception, have given a thumbs up. I owned a 1998 Neon with the DOHC motor and I would not trade this car for any import. The car had 0 quality issues and performed flawlessly. Imports are somewhat overrated.

I owned a 98 Neon and it was one of the biggest POS I ever owned.

It had warranty to 60,00k and at 60,001 KM the thing fell apart. The suspension bushing all went, brake rotors warped, AC condenser failed, sunroof would not work, plug wires failed head gasket failed.

I would have traded it for a bag of chips.

Maybe an SRT isn't that bad but by far the Majority of 98 DOHC Neons did not have 0 quality issues ..in fact they had major headgate issues in most of them .
