Used Car Review:
1992-95 Honda Civic

1994 Honda Civic SI HatchbackAn affordable, efficient and compact import with a sporting edge, it's hard to beat a used Civic, says Chris Chase. However, he warns, "The reliability of any used car that's already more than a decade old will have more to do with how it was maintained than with how well it was initially built."     More...

I see a lot of that generation civic around actually. Mostly in the gross turquoise colour. A neighbour down the street has a white one and it is rusting beyond belief. Half the body is eaten up by rust  :o

My '93 Si Coupe was an amazing car.  Arguably the most attractive Civic produced, really light-weight with nimble handling, peppy enough to be fun (and safe for relatively inexperienced drivers) and as reliable as increasing gas prices.  I traded mine at 185,000 kms with the clutch just starting to get a bit sketchy.  The only non regular-maintenance change I had to do was a battery.  It's probably still running around out there with 300,000+ kms and a 4" fart pipe on the back now.

I had always wanted a '92-93 Civic VX, but would happily take the Si hatch as well   Make mine bright blue - or that teal I happened to like.

My cousin has a green CX hatch he picked up last year (new motor, this, that, and the other) he seems to be enjoying, and it's nice to still see them around.

A buddy of mine in St. John's had a red 1994 DX.  We would go on made tours of the Avalon Peninsual in that thing.  It sipped gas.  He sold it, moved to Ottawa, has no veicle for a couple of years, and then boght a brand new 2000 Golf TDI.
I'd rather be car-poor than house-poor...

This was the Civic at it's best.  It's too bad we never got some of the versions that existed in Japan.  My wife's 92' still going strong but the rust is creeping in.

While these vintage Civic's are great cars, the article contained several errors. The author listed the U.S. engine lineup, which was different in Canada.

The 70 hp engine was never installed in the 92-95 CX models in Canada. The 102 hp engine was used in all models, except the Si, which had the 125 hp VTEC powerplant. Canadian EX models also had the 102 hp engine, while in the U.S. the EX had the 125 hp engine.

Muffler shops often install the wrong sized mufflers and tailpipes on the CX and EX models  in Canada as they are probably using a U.S. spec chart...Thus putting too small of tailpipe on the CX and too large on the EX... :popo:

Loved the most recent article by Chris Chase! Wanted to know the market value of my car.

I, still to this day, can't get over how my Civic CX 1995 Hatchback has performed, for a car its size and for the price...paid 11,000$ plus tax back in 1995, 206,000 km and still running very well! A little rust but that's normal.

I 'm amazed at how stable it is at speeds of over 160 km an hour! I did Toronto to Montreal once in 4.5 hours. The handling is almost like a sports car. Hugs the road. Maximum speed, approx 190 km an hour. And still very stable! For a 1.5 liter engine and 102 hp!

Even drove once, from Montreal to Chicago and back, in a long weekend.
It performs well on long trips. You can average 130km an hour and you don't feel like like your straining your engine...

I also used my Civic as my "half ton truck" to haul paint, plywood, gyproc, bath tub.... no problem.

No problem starting the Civic in the winter either at -30 *C without a block heater...No problem in deep snow either. Rarely get stuck....

This car has done it all for me. I don't like cars generally (money pits)  but when I get rid of this one, it will be like losing a friend.

:iagree: Still my favourite generation of Civic coupe. Looks great, especially with some subtle mods, cheap to run, and with the aftermarket scene behind it, easy to play with.  Look no further for cheap, reliable transportation or as a project car to have some fun with. Back in Vic some guys took an EG hatch and installed a K20 engine, makes quite a good rally car!

While my true love in Civics is the generation before, this car still shows Honda at the top of their game. A car designed by a bunch of guys who really loved cars. There was no need whatsoever for the car to be as good as it was, but that is what Honda was about back then.
Perhaps my candidate for the best small car ever.

I had to search out the original article to get clarity in my mind's eye exactly what these look like. The reason is that, while you still see an occasional original 4-door sedan and the coupes sometimes appear as semi-customized good-weather toy cars, the hatchbacks have simply disappeared from our roads here. I would guess that I see more of the '88-'91 vintage than these, though the low-budget ricer kids have moved on to the '96-up version. I presume this model have all either rusted out or been beaten to death by the previous-gen "tuner" kids and perhaps were less durable. I do recall that when introduced, these were seen as a step backwards from the exceptional '88-'91 design.
