CD Article: 2006 Infiniti M35x

You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
Test Drive:
2006 Infiniti M35x

2006 Infiniti M35xNew for 2006, the Infiniti M35x lacks the charisma of cars like the BMW 530xi and Audi A6 3.2 quattro, but it's a beautifully finished car that's considerably less expensive than many of its rivals, says Editor Greg Wilson.  An "unusual" dash layout and "so-so" styling are its weak points, he says.     More...

Not a bad looking car by any stretch...  just nothign terribly distinctive about it (outside, anyway...  those seats are something else).  Infiniti does most things right, imo: G35 coupe, G35 sedan, Q45...  but they seem to have missed the boat with the M35.  There's just nothing stand-outish about it, and to compete with BMW 3-series you need something more, I think.

IMO the lack of a manual tranny also hurts it (but I guess that's what the G35 is for).

It's all subjective, I find this car to be one of the nicest one out there this year, inside and out.  I could see myself in an M35x with the worlds best V6 under the hood. :)

I have to admit that the price difference to a 530xi might be compelling...but no manual... If I were in that market I'd rather have a 1-2 year old 530xi ( although a 2 year old one is still only one year old at the moment if you see what i mean)  On the other hand.... manual 5 series esp the 530xi are not all that common as the Great Canadian Public has been conned into thinking that automatics are good 'cos they leave a spare hand for coffee of phone! ;D

I wonder why the Volvo S60R wasn't mentioned for competition?  Starting at $61,500 its right in there with 300HP, AWD and a 6 speed manual it should give it a good challenge.

I like the looks of the M35X and would consider it if I was in that car bracket.

I was put-off by this article because I find the Infiniti M-Series to be a very attractive car. It looks long (with a nice long hood more like a sports car), with a wide stance, and a beltline that gradually sweeps up into the rear which makes it look substantial on the road (allowing more rear seat space too), complete with the dual exhuast. The right alloys really set this car off stunningly. The interior is a little something different too - gorgeous leather, although I don't love the look of the Rosewood. Another would would complement it better and would look less IKEA-like.

From what I've read elsewhere, one of M's greatest attributes is how it drives. It's more BMW-like than most other competitors, and the V8 is blazingly quick, roomier, at far less cost. Maybe because they tested the X version, it didn't feel as sporty as a RWD non-X. In this segment, I think it's a top contender if you're not looking to spend $75Gs on a highly contented mid-sized luxury car.

I like everything up until the rear end.  Lights look too big and bulky to me.  This matte finish on the wood looks interesting.  Not too bad at all.  The glossy lacquer finish is so 80's.  ;)

I think this car represents a value buy.  I haven't tried out the horizontal HVAC panel....but I don't like the fact that the joystick for the screen is so far away.  You still have to reach for it.  I prefer the iDrive location that BMW uses.  Right in the centre console.

I don't mind the look of the tail lights. They've got a G35 coupe look to them. The placing of the turn signal is a little odd, but it still looks great. I like that interior.

Good point about the S60R quad. It's right in there and has an available 6 speed manual to boot. Although I believe the M35 is a bit bigger in size. Still, it would be in interesting comparo.

Hey Bob, great business meeting.  Wow, nice car, whaddya got under the hood?

BOB: Well let's see, it is a "V6 3.5"!

WOW!! Look at that engine!  What does 3.5 mean Bob?

BOB: Umm well I think it means the number of the plastic panels here that make up the engine.

Beautiful engine Bob.

BOB: Yeah, these new 3.5's are nice, but I like colours of the interior better.

What I'm saying is (the same with the TL) under the hood there is way too much plastic that actually impresses some (BULLET) buyers as the "engine".  I would like to see a return to showing off the engine rather than covering it up - especially on more performance oriented cars.

The cover is there not to hide the engine or impress those of us with above-average incomes...  It's simply there to reduce NVH.

Common does not mean majority.  At my time at Acura it was common so see wealthy buyers who had little interest/knowledge in the fine product they were buying, though the majority did appreciate it.  Still a shame really...
