CD Article: 2006 Subaru Legacy 2.5i sedan

Test Drive:

The 2006 Legacy sedan is still the only mid-sized family car available with all-wheel drive for under $30,000, says Editor, Greg Wilson. Its unique AWD system "not only enhances traction in rain, snow and ice, but also improves stability," he says.  But the engine "feels a bit weak when pulling out to pass a slower car on the freeway."

Again... love this car - the more sporty look for the base 2.5i is superb with the additional equipment.

Although I like the look of the sedan a lot, the wagon would be near the top of my list if there was a stand-alone sunroof option.

I've recommended this car to a few people now. Great value and lots of features for the base price.

The wagon would be my choice too, especially if the sedan's rear seat doesn't fold down. What's the deal with that? ???
I used to work here.

I like the Legacy too, but always founds its rear passenger space to be lacking... I'm pretty sure it has less rear passenger legroom than a Corolla or Civic... so just for that, I'm not exactly sure how the Legacy can be considered a mid-size family car... family with very young kids maybe... but certainly not a family with teenagers...

A nice sedan, if that is your preference, but I would always choose the wagon.

Consider me one of the few who would take the sedan. Looks great and would be considered by me if I were looking in that price range for sure. Looks great in black and looks pretty sporty with those alloys as SAM said.

Why is the 2.5i has the GT's rims"?! That's not fair!

Saw a chick washing her red Legacy GT wagon in the garage. Now that's some gal....  :)

It's cars like this that make me wonder why Subaru isn't selling more cars than Honda/Toyota...  lots of features, quality, and real AWD.

From the sounds of it, though, the Legacy sounds more like a Civic than an Accord competitor; similar size, no V6 option (?)...  maybe Subaru needs to bite a bullet and bump the size of this car up a bit to be closer to Accord and Camry.

Boxer engines do NOT come in a V configuration.  ;D Subaru does have an H6 though.  ;)

Force of habit...  you should hear me talking about V4s, that's really embarassing...  ahem.

Do they offer the H6 in the Legacy?  And if so, why aren't they selling more of these cars?!?

I just checked, and the H6 is in the Outback (Legacy), but not any of the regular ones. It's also used in the B9 Tribeca of course.

I'd definitely take a Subie Legacy (sedan) over your Camcord, M6, Sonata, Fusion, etc. any day of the week.

But I always wonder, Subaru claims that they have the fixed rear seat because they used the space for additional structural stiffness stuff. But how much does it really benefit the car? I'd happily forgo a bit of that in exchange for a foldable seat.

They don't put a V6 or H6 in the Legacy but you can select the GT model which has the 2.5 Turbo which is quite fast.

This car is very high on my list.  The pass-through safety thing story I heard as well, as well as the frameless windows being a safety issue as well, the salesman told me that on side impact a car equipped with a window frame can break and seriously injure or kill the occupants.  I guess Subaru puts in a lot of efforts in studying this stuff.

Salesman told me the exact same thing, so it must be a subaru training thing.

Back in 1997 I was in the market for a full size pickup truck.  Ford had just introduced its new F150, with the third door in its supercab model.  While test driving a new Dodge pickup, I mentioned that I had just had a test drive in the new F150. and I really liked the third door.  The salesman told me that Dodge wasn't going to put a third door in their pickups, because they made the vehicle very unsafe in a side collision.  Of course, a year later Dodge put one in their extended cab pickups.

I know that some people don't like/don't trust frame-less windows, and I can't address the safety aspect, but I loved them on my Forester. Getting in and out with the window down almost reminded me of my MGA days.  ;D

I've recently purchased a 2006 Sedan and although all the negative comments are true, (ie. small, no rear fold...) I think to compare with a v6 is a mistake.  I think it's very comparable to 1st gen A4 when they came into the market.  If anyone is considering a Jetta or 4cyl accord take a second look at this car.  The only problem is trying to find a subaru dealership and a decent sales person.
