CD Article: 2006 Hyundai Accent GLS

You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
Test Drive:
2006 Hyundai Accent GLS

2006 Hyundai Accent GLS"What stands out upon hopping into Hyundai's least expensive all-new model is how un-cheap it looks and feels," says Chris Chase. "The interior is noticeably improved over that of the outgoing version," he notes. But with two people riding in back, "expect to hit the rear suspension bump stops regularly on rough roads."        More...

Sounds like "Fairly well appointed for an economy car, but not much to drive."  :-\

Whoo.  Almost $19K for the loaded GLS Accent.  it comes very well equipped (with nice to have features), but that's getting up there for a compact.  You can get a Civic with the same 6 airbags, ABS with EBD etc.  Add to it a better driving experience and the loaded version of the Accent might be a slow seller.  For $13K, the base model is a good price.  Only thing to compare it to at that price is the Aveo.  For $13K to $15K, this car is it.

If you want a 2dr.....the Yaris is an alternative....but for 4 door transportation the Accent is it.

...until the Yaris 4 door comes out. ;) In the price range the new Sentra may have a model that can go head on with this, a far better looking car IMO.

Yesterday I learned you can't get 2 folding rear seats in the Yaris unless you buy the fully loaded RS.  Now that is silly packaging.  The Yaris would be useless for any cargo without that feature.  The accent is a larger car, seems like a nice upgrade from the previous version.

Doesn't the Non-RS Yaris have a single piece fold-down rear seat? It might not be as flexible, but you can still load a decent amount of cargo.

Yes 1 side, but the vehicle is so small, not having the dual fold downs is really silly.

I've always thought that the way Toyota packaged their options was weird.

As for the Accent, nothing offensive, and comes decently equipped. Should be worth consideration for anyone in this segment. As to the pricing, as MDX said $19K is kind of steep fully loaded. If I were going to buy one, I'd have to consider the base one. You're marching into some tough territory at the $19K mark.

That is one of the reasons I never considered a non-RS. The flat-fold, split seats are a great (and necessary) feature IMO. Unfortunately, the Accent sounds like a real dog (sorry Daffi) to drive based upon the test drive report.  :P

A Civic with almost similar equipment (std airbags, PW/DL, keyless, Air, Auto - without seat heaters or alloys) is considerably more at the low end of the market at $20,080 vs $17,645 for the Accent. That's $2,450. Sure, the Civic is more powerful and slightly larger, but the bottom line is the price is $2,500 less, monthly payments probably $45 less over 4 years, and resale the manufacturer cannot change.

The sub-compacts all overlap compacts at some point (Yaris even more so, Fit also I'd imagine), but I feel the Accent equipment is comprehensive. Will be interesting to see how the 3dr slots - I'm potentially in the market for it. Versa and Caliber will really be the question marks - both have larger interiors and engines (and luxury features in Versa), at what's promised to be Accent pricing.

The equipment levels of the comparably-priced Yaris and Accent are vastly different.  I've been out looking at these cars with my brother's g/f this past week.  Due to price, she wasn't even interested in looking at the Yaris.  I insisted and after a drive, she was sold on the Toyota... that is, until we compared pricing again.  To get what she wants (nothing fancy, just AC, Automatic and p-locks... 60/40 split seat would sure be nice), she'd be spending around $65/month more for the Yaris.  And, to add insult to injury, at that level, it's only $12/month off the price of a comparably-equipped Corolla!
I would think many people looking at vehicles in this price category are financing or leasing their cars and Toyota's whopping 6%+ rates make a pretty big difference for limited budget buyers.

If you want the convenience of the hatchback (and the heated seats of the GLS model Accent), the Kia Rio5 offers them and is based on the same platform as the Accent.  It's surprisingly quiet and smooth on the highway for this caliber of cars.

I even like the looks more, but wouldn't buy it because of the lack of SABs and ABS combo.

To me, until the Versa and Fit arrive, I'd tell potential buyers to hold their hats if they could until April. Versa could make the biggest splash IMO, even if the fuel economy figures aren't up there.

:iagree: That's basically how the review sounds to me. Definitely not a "driver's car", even for the segment.

I like Hyundais, I've always liked them and find them to be good value.  There, I've said it!

However, I would NOT pay $16,695 (plus $950 for the automatic) for the Accent in the review!  For that price, I bought a base Corolla with automatic!  Let's think about it, the Corolla is a larger car, with better resale value, stronger engine at comparable fuel economy levels, AND a proven design.  The Accent has more bells and whistles, but for a car in this market, where basic, reliable transportation is usually the key consideration, a Corolla seems like a hell of a better deal to me!

Sorry Hyundai, this is a car I would have considered at $13k, maybe even at $14k, but not when it costs more than a Corolla.  Incidently, does this mean that the new Elantra prices will also be balloning up?  THAT would be a comparable car to the Corolla and Civic.. the Accent should be priced to compete with Aveos, Yaris, and Rios.

What do you mean by "1 side"? I'm pretty sure the whole back seat folds down.
