CD Article: 2006 Lexus IS 250 AWD

You may discuss our cover story of the day in this thread....
Test Drive:
2006 Lexus IS 250 AWD

2006 Lexus IS 250 AWDThe Lexus IS' "tuner styling" has been ditched for something "that would look at home on a German Autobahn", says Paul Williams, and its inline six cylinder engine has been replaced by two new V6 engines, he reports. The IS 250 AWD offers a "modest" 204 horsepower but "gets high marks for smoothness".  All-wheel drive is available for the first time.        More...

A beautiful car, I would have to say that the 07 Camry has taken some styling cues from this car.

After that review I'm left wondering how does the car drive.  ::)

Thanks Wing.  You gave me more info than the review did.  Now only if we didn't need a wagon.

I'm very dissapointed in the IS 250. It is a beautiful car. Quality and interior are super. But its like so many other Toyotas out there. Souless. 200hp ? 8.5 seconds 0-60? My 168 hp 5 spd v50 will dust it. Its like a prettier (smaller inside) Camary.

They may know their target market. The BMW buyer who buys for the prestige and dealer service rtaher than the way the car actually drives. Should be trouble free but they alredy have the Es300 to fill the lux market. The GS series is similar. Why no true sporty car.

Well it's only a 2.5L engine... 200hp out of a 2.5L V6 engine is very good, not too mention that it offers similar, if not better, fuel economy than your V50. And I'd rather have a small V6 engine than a 4 or 5-cylinder engine, much better torque all over the band. The reviewer says it himself, the lack of sheer grunt is offset by the smoothness of the powertrain. Someone buying the IS250 is not expecting a performance car, he wants an all around great car. If they want more than that, there is the IS350; that's why Lexus offers the bigger engine.

And hopefully Lexus will introduce the 6-speed manual gearbox for the IS350 soon...  :'(

Also keep in mind that this is almost in-line with JDM Nissan's 250GT (G25 if it is ever offered in North America) and 350GT (G35) mantra. The Nissan Skyline 250GT makes around 210-215hp.

The BMW 325xi goes to 100kph in 8.2 seconds, not much of a difference.

I also don't think the IS250 is aimed at people seeking a really sporty sedan, more like people wanting a luxury and some what sporty sedan.

 >:( >:( >:( >:(  Exactly, how can manufactures can stand up and call a car “sporty” with a wheezing engine which can’t beat my Highlander is embarrassing. 8.2 seconds is criminal in a sports sedan, there should be a law against false advertising.

Straight line speed and acceleration is only one part of a complex equation.  It's important, but an overall big picture perspective of the vehicle should be used to determine if it is or isn't a sports sedan.  I think it gitupandgo's alright....brakes pretty well, corners nicely, and is fairly comfortable.  I say it's a good entry level luxury sports sedan.

 :iagree:

Some people pay too much attention to acceleration figures... There is much more to a car than just acceleration.

Yes very true. But why design a well handling and balanced car with no engine to properly utilize all that performance engineering?

I wouldn't say a 2.5L V6 developping a very smooth 200hp can be considered as "no engine". People buy Lexus vehicles have reliability and refinement on their priorities list a lot higher than performance.

And besides, base BMWs come with an engine that only develops 174hp... and nobody says that those base BMWs have "no engines"... why all the uproar with the base IS *only* having a 205hp engine? Doesn't make any sense to me....

Watched the latest fifth gear, they ran an e30 M3 and it was SOOOO Slow, slower than or close to the same speed around their track as a suzuki swift!

It's funny, but the M3 is well balanced and fun to drive.

The Lexus IS felt faster than 8.5 seconds, I'm sure it is not any faster than that, but it felt fast.

On another note, my Subaru always benefits from the cold weather today 0-60 was in the 1.5 second range ;)
