2006 Toyota Yaris CE 2-doorThe new Toyota Yaris starts under $14,000, but the price can soon balloon close to $20,000 with options, says Editor Greg Wilson.  What sort of Yaris can you get for under $15,000?  Wilson drives a Yaris base model to find out.     More...

There are already dime-of-a-dozen of new Yarises on the road, mostly LE 5-doors. I saw my first CE 3-door driven by an elderly woman tonight in snow. :rofl2:

I haven't driven a 3-door, or a base model, but the review seems very accurate based upon my experience with my 5-door RS.  :)

The Yaris is a great choice for "old" (I don't like to use that word) people who are just looking for something to drive around with.  It's small, reliable, inexpensive on gas and relatively safe ... they don't drive old Cadillacs and Lincolns anymore.  ;D

ABS part of a $2,500 package? Way to go Toyota...  ???

I still can't get used to the styling of this car... liked the styling of the Echo HB much much more... and now the new Camry will look like an oversized Yaris...

I would never have bought an Echo.  Yaris styling is much better, imho.  It is a little pricey, though.  I ended up paying for a few things I would not have got as separate options.

Ya know, if the EL died tomorrow, I'd consider a Yaris, though in the small wagon segment, I did like our Matrix as well.

I think the upcoming Accent hatch would be my personal pick, but it's 3dr only. The 5dr Nissan Versa will probably be a strong entry with sizing, pricing, quality, and style, but the fuel economy may not be up to snuff. Honda Fit is the '?' mark. The Yaris I WANT to like, and like them on the streets, but think they're getting up there in price and I don't fit into it well. Mind you, the RS is still significantly less than a Mazda3 Sport or a Matrix with similar options.

Quite like the European look, but prefer the Hyundai brand name with dealerships that tend to be newer/larger, as well as the ABS and SABags that Hyundai offers. I'm tall and the 3dr's wider doors work better for me too.

Funny, 30 years ago I would have been very happy with a basic,$14,000 Yaris.  Now I want more.  I've become accustomed to power windows, power door locks, power mirrors, keyless entry and air conditioning, and want these 'extras' on any new car I purchase.  How times change.
A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kickboxing.

:iagree: I would have been 20 years ago. Now I too want more - thats why I bought an RS, B package and got all those things.  ;D  :drive2: ;D

Still not sold on the styling...  really looking forward to seeing the Honda Fit.  I have this feeling that it will be the car to beat.  With some tasteful mods, I think the Fit is likely to be my next car.

Unless I can afford to go an Si, of course.  :)

I dislike the Fit/Jazz's looks (minivan like, looks narrow and tall and wimpy/fragile except in very few good photos), but like the interior layout and functionality.

Versa will be the car to beat for me. Hopefully it will have better more alive handling than I'm thinking it will too.

The Versa may well be a good car, but it is in the next larger size class - more in the Aerio range I believe.

Precisely why it'll be the car to watch if priced like Fit/Yaris as promised. But, at the same time it may suffer a fuel economy and spritely handling deficit.
